Continuing a look at former Valley Leaguers who have been crushing it this spring so far, let’s take a look at four players in the infield, as listed by D1baseball.com. (Stats through Monday, April 4)
Second Basemen
- #12- Nate Furman, Charlotte (Winchester 2021): .398/.525/.519 in 108 at-bats, with 34 runs, six doubles, two triples, one home run, 13 RBIs, and 25 walks against SEVEN strikeouts. No big deal.
- #14- Brad Burckel, McNeese (Waynesboro 2019): .364/.450/.564 in 110 at-bats, with 29 runs, six doubles, two triples, four home runs, 19 RBIs, and 14/24 BB/K.
Shortstops
- #12- Griffin Cheney, Georgia State (Strasburg 2018-19): .413/.524/.800 in 80 at-bats, with 26 runs, four doubles, nine home runs, 20 RBIs, and 20/14 BB/K.
Third Basemen
- #27- Alejandro Figueredo, Florida Gulf Coast (Waynesboro 2021): .425/.504/.664 in 113 at-bats, with 27 runs, ten doubles, one triple, five home runs, 32 RBIs, and 18/22 BB/K.
Outfielders are next, and it’s clearly a position of strength, as 12 guys are listed!

These guys are really producing; but, deep in the curiosity corner is Nate Furman with an OBP higher than his SLG (.525/.519). In his 2021 WINC season, Furman pulled (.556/.580). Of the 18 VBL 2021 hitters with .300+ BA’s, only Ramses Cordova had a higher OBP than SLG (.363/.357). Even MLB HOF member Nellie Fox, of bottle bat and dink/dunk fame, went .348/.363.
