2017 Double-A Pitcher of the Year

Today we’ll take a look at the best former Valley Leaguers in Double-A in 2017- the best of the Texas, Southern, and Eastern Leagues.

The past:

2016- Ryan Yarbrough (Luray 2012)
2015- Chad Kuhl (New Market 2012)
2014- Drew Rucinski (Luray 2008-10)

The past list is a bit different than the past list for the AA hitters- Rucinski and Kuhl have both pitched in the major leagues, and Yarbrough probably will this summer… at least, we can hope.

Austin Gomber Springfield 2017

Our 2017 Double-A pitcher of the year is St. Louis Cardinal prospect Austin Gomber (Luray 2012)! (Notice that Gomber and Yarbrough pitched for the same VBL team.) Austin, often called a bulldog on the mound, went 10-7, 3.34 for Springfield in the Texas League. He had a 1.17 WHIP, 3.2 BB/9, and 8.8 K/9 in 143 innings pitched. Austin was also the 2015 full season A-ball Pitcher of the Year, so this is his second “award.” I imagine Austin will start 2018 in Triple-A, where we’ll see if he add a third title to his trophy case!

Others to consider:

  • Kevin Herget (Strasburg 2012), also for Springfield: 1-2, 1.87, 5 saves in 13 games and 19 1/3 innings, 1.04 WHIP, 1.4 BB/9, 9.8 K/9
  • Jake Johansen (Front Royal 2011), for Birmingham: 2-2, 3.42, 2 saves, 1.29 WHIP, 4.1 BB.9, 6.5 K/9 in 26 1/3 innings
  • Jack Charleston (Charles Town 2014), also for Birmingham: 1-1, 2.84, 3 saves, 1.26 WHIP, 3.8 BB/9, 8.5 K/9 in 19 innings (and one awesome mustache)
  • Sam Howard (Staunton 2012), for Hartford: 1-4, 2.33, 0.89 WHIP, 1.9 BB/9, 7.8 K/9 in 46 1/3 innings…. and a quick call-up to Triple-A….
  • Chris Huffman (Staunton 2012-13), for San Antonio: 4-4, 3.13, 1.26 WHIP, 2.0 BB/9, 7.7 K/9 in 69 innings
  • Kyle McGrath (Staunton 2011), also for San Antonio: 1-1, 2.66, 0.84 WHIP, 1.5 BB/9, 10.3 K/9 in 23 23 innings
