Our 6th best hitter in the 2018 Valley League season is not only a premium athlete, but has a draft pedigree as well. Drafted in the 28th round out of high school in 2017, Oraj Anu came to the Valley after an outstanding freshman season for Wallace Community College in Dothan, where he played for the former major leaguer Mackey Sasser.
A switch-hitter who can throw with both hands as well, Oraj put up the following line for the champion New Market Rebels:
He finished 7th in the league in batting average, 5th in OPS, 4th in slugging percentage, 5th in total bases (78), 10th in RBIs, tied for 3rd in home runs, tied for 4th in runs, and was named 1st team All-Valley in the outfield. He was hitter of the day twice, and his best game was on July 12th against Waynesboro when he went 4-5 with a run. He had 4 hits in a game once, 3 hits 6 times, and 2 hits 11 times. He was named ATVL’s 5th best prospect in the league, Baseball America named him #4, and Perfect Game pegged him at #3.
He crushed it at Wallace, too, being named an ABCA 2nd team All-American at designated hitter after the following season:
The “scary” thing about Oraj is that he has such potential left. Several of the coaches ATVL spoke to after the season said things like, “He doesn’t even know how good he can be,” and “he has incredible potential.” Indeed, the ball sounds different coming off his bat. In time, Oraj may prove to be the best player in the Valley in 2018.
Congratulations on your excellent season, Oraj!
