I went to a Phillies game a long time ago, and Bob Abreu took a pitch on the outside corner for a strike. “Swing the bat!” the dude behind me yelled. I looked out of the corner of my eye at my friend, and we each widened our eyes a little bit, but didn’t say anything, because getting arrested in Philadelphia is not on my bucket list. Abreu’s on-base percentages were almost always over .400 in those years partly because he was so patient at the plate. The guy behind me didn’t realize how important plate discipline can be for a hitter in pro ball.
Anyway, all that is to say that walks are actually pretty important. A hitter’s job is to help his team score runs, and the best way to do that is to avoid making outs by getting on base.
So who are the hitters who walked the most in the VBL since 2004? I’m so glad you asked:
|6||Sanchez Gartman||New Market||2009||42|
Chase Sudduth had the most in 2018… with 40! Just missed.
