CB Daily’s Preseason League Teams, Part II

Ready for the next group? Part II will focus on the Big 12, Big South, Big Ten, and CAA. Thirteen total players are listed, three from Charlottesville, two each from Front Royal, Strasburg, and New Market, and one each from Purcellville, Waynesboro, Covington, and Staunton. Again, these are Collegiate Baseball’s preseason all-league selections….

Big 12

  • Marques Inman (Purcellville 2016) is listed as honorable mention at first base for West Virginia. For the Mountaineers in ’18, he hit 319/387/529 in 191 at-bats, with 31 runs, 40 RBIs, 20 doubles, 1 triple, and 6 home runs. He went 5-10 for Purcellville in the summer of 2016 (and ended his summer on the Cape).
  • Honorable mention at second base is Kansas’s James Cosentino (Waynesboro 2017). James hit 269/387/452 in 208 at-bats in 2018 for the Jayhawks, along with 40 runs, 24 RBIs, 9 doubles, 4 triples, and 7 home runs. He went 19-84 in 21 games for the Generals in the summer of 2017.

Big South

  • In addition to being ATVL’s top starting pitcher in the entire league in 2017 for Strasburg, Winthrop’s Zach Peek (Strasburg 2017) is a preseason first team selection in the Big South. Zach went 6-5, 3.74 in 14 starts and 89 innings for the Eagles last year, with a 1.15 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9, and thanks to 99 strikeouts, a 10.0 K/9. For the Express in ’17, he was even better, finishing 4-1, 1.80, with a 0.89 WHIP, 1.5 BB/9, and 10.3 K/9 in 35 innings.
  • His teammate Nate Pawelczyk (New Market 2016-2017) joins him on the first team. Nate went 7-6, 3.77 in 88 innings in college in 2018, with a 1.28 WHIP, 3.8 BB/9, and 7.9 K/9. He struggled in 2016 with the Rebels, going 0-1, 5.93 and a 1.92 WHIP, but he was unhittable the next summer, when he went 3-0, 0.55 in 16 1/3 innings, with a 0.99 WHIP, 3.9 BB/9, and 12.7 K/9.
  • Tyler Weekley (New Market 2015), from Charleston Southern, is also first team at starting pitcher. Tyler went 4-7, 3.87 in 76 2/3 innings last year in college, with a 1.28 WHIP, 1.9 BB/9, and 7.5 K/9. He threw 4 1/3 shutout innings for the Rebels in 2015.
  • Eric Jones (Covington 2018)- not the same Eric Jones listed in Part I in the Atlantic 10- is honorable mention at third base for Gardner-Webb. In college in 2018, he hit 276/317/358 in 232 at-bats, with 7 doubles, 4 home runs, and a 12/33 BB/K ratio. For the ‘Jacks in ’18, he hit 300/358/457 in 70 at-bats, with 2 doubles, 3 home runs, and a 8/9 BB/K ratio.
  • Cody Maw (also Charleston Southern), one of the best relievers (9th) in the league in 2018 for the Charlottesville Tom Sox, is listed as honorable mention as a starting pitcher. For Southern, Cody went 3-2, 3.52 in 2018, with a 1.26 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9, and 7.2 K/9. For the Tom Sox, he went 1-2, 3.63 in 22 1/3 innings, with a 1.09 WHIP, 0.0 BB/9, and 14.9 K/9. His BB/K ratio was 0/37!

Big Ten

  • Dominic Canzone (Front Royal 2017) is first team at outfield for Ohio State. In 2018 for the Buckeyes, Canzone hit 323/395/447 in 257 at-bats, with 18 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, and a dynamite 31/29 BB/K ratio. He was one of the best hitters in the league in 2017, when he hit 404/457/544 for the Cardinals, with 3 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, and a 11/7 BB/K ratio.
  • Canzone’s teammate, both at OSU and Front Royal, Conner Pohl, was named honorable mention at first base. He hit 279/383/393 in 229 at-bats in college last year, and hit 269/331/300 in 130 at-bats for the Cardinals in the summer of 2017.

Colonial Athletic Association

  • Danny Wondrack (Charlottesville 2016), from Charleston, is first team preseason at catcher. Danny hit 253/367/516 in 190 at-bats in college in 2018, with 12 doubles, 12 home runs, and a 33/51 BB/K ratio. For the Tom Sox in ’16, Wondrack hit 270/350/418 in 122 at-bats, with 12 doubles, 2 home runs, and a 11/22 BB/K ratio.
  • Dupree Hart, Wondrack’s teammate both in college and for the Tom Sox, is first team at second base. Dupree hit 326/402/434 in 221 at-bats in college in 2018, with 14 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 15 stolen bases, and a 24/21 BB/K ratio. For the Tom Sox, he hit 294/383/381 in 126 at-bats, with 8 doubles, 1 home run, and a 19/15 BB/K ratio.
  • Sticking with Charleston, 2nd team preseason in the outfield is Bradley Dixon (Strasburg 2015-16). Bradley batted 79 times for Strasburg in 2015, slashing 354/414/367, and played in only one game in 2016.. but what a game it was. He went 2-2 with 3 RBIs and a stolen base. In college in 2018, he hit 291/335/389 in 175 at-bats, with 8 doubles, 3 home runs, and a 9/34 BB/K ratio.
  • Dean Stramara (Staunton 2017), from Towson, was named to the second team at starting pitcher. In 2018 at Towson, he started 4 games and came out of the bullpen for 17, finishing at 2-1, 3.94 in 59 innings, with a 1.50 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9, and 7.3 K/9. He was strictly a reliever for the Braves in 2017, going 4-3, 5.13, with a 1.44 WHIP, 3.8 BB/9, and 11.6 K/9 in 26 1/3 innings. He struck out 34 batters!
