Checking in With 2018 Top Starters

Like we did with the 2018 top hitters a few days ago, let’s take a look at how the top starters from last summer are faring this spring! (Stats are through Thursday, March 14)

The Top Five

  • Jared Weatherbee (Charlottesville), from Elon, the league’s Pitcher of the Year, is 1-3, 5.14 in 21 innings so far. He has a 1.238 WHIP, 3.4 BB/9, and 10.3 K/9. He was the 10th best prospect in the league according to Baseball America.
  • Kyle Arjona (Harrisonburg), from New Orleans, signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, and is at spring training.
  • Ramon Miranda (Front Royal), from Arizona Western, is 2-2, 3.38 after 5 starts and 1 relief appearance. He has a 1.219 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9, and 8.4 K/9 in 32 innings pitched.
  • Fred Villarreal (Waynesboro), from Houston, pitching exclusively out of the bullpen, is 1-0, 0.98, with 2 saves, a 1.148 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9, and 9.3 K/9 in 18 1/3 innings pitched. Fred made all three prospect lists after the season, and is Baseball America’s 9th best draft prospect in the American Athletic Conference.
  • Tyler Bielamowicz (Waynesboro), also from Houston, has started 3 games so far, and is 0-1, 7.71, with a 1.538 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9, and 6.2 K/9 in 11 2/3 innings pitched.

The Middle Five

  • Evan “Buckshot” Flynn (Staunton), from Francis Marion, has started 6 games so far, and is 3-0, 3.86, with a 1.315 WHIP, 3.6 BB/9, and 9.4 K/9 in 32 2/3 innings pitched.
  • New Mexico State’s Chance Hroch (Strasburg) has won all four games he’s started thus far. He’s 4-0, 1.93, with a 1.416 WHIP, 1.5 BB/9, and 8.1 K/9 in 23 1/3 innings.
  • Saint Mary’s Nathan Schneider (Waynesboro) has appeared in 5 games so far, all in relief. He’s 1-0, 3.86, with a 1.34 WHIP, 3.8 BB/9, and 8.5 K/9 in 11 2/3 innings pitched.
  • Jake Hershman (Charlottesville), from Wofford, has pitched 20 1/3 innings, all in relief. He’s 1-1, 2.66, with 1 save, a 1.231 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9, and 9.3 K/9.
  • Gabriel Ponce (Front Royal), a transfer to Arizona Western from San Diego, has been lights-out so far this year. He’s 2-1, 1.80, with a 1.200 WHIP, 3.6 BB/9, and 14.8 K/9 in 25 innings pitched. He’s struck out 41 batters!

The Last Six

  • Yale’s Justin Ager (Purcellville), a native of Hamilton, Virginia, has appeared in only 2 games so far, spanning 2 1/3 innings. He’s 0-1, 27.00 so far.
  • Jordyn Eglite (Covington), from San Francisco State, has started 3 games and pitched 16 innings so far. Overall, he’s 1-0, 6.75, with a 1.875 WHIP, 4.5 BB/9, and 4.5 K/9.
  • Turner Ashby product Justin Showalter (Staunton), attending JMU, has started 4 games for the Dukes so far. He’s 1-0, 4.11, with a 1.373 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9, and 9.4 K/9 in 15 1/3 innings.
  • Chase Best (Covington), a transfer to North Alabama from Lawson State, is 0-4, 6.30 after 4 starts and 20 innings so far. He has a 1.850 WHIP, 4.5 BB/9, and 8.1 K/9.
  • Coastal Carolina’s Dylan Gentry (Winchester) has pitched in 5 games so far, all in relief. In 7 2/3 innings, he’s 1-0, 0.00, with a 0.779 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9, and 9.4 K/9.
  • Virginia Tech’s Luke Scherzer (Harrisonburg) has appeared in 5 games so far, with 4 of them being starts. In 15 2/3 innings, he’s 1-2, 5.74, with a 1.64 WHIP, 4.0 BB/9, and 6.3 K/9.
