Top DI Performers, Tuesday March 19

Here are a few top performers from Division I games held yesterday- March 19th.

Hitter of the Day

A 4-4 day at the plate will win this most times, and that’s just what NC State’s Jonny Butler did yesterday. A Winchester Royal in 2018, Butler went 4-4, with 4 runs, 2 RBIs, a walk, and a double. Jonny is now hitting 275/420/350 in 80 at-bats this spring, along with an excellent 17/12 BB/K ratio.

Others of Note

  • Andy Szamski, Radford (Staunton 2015-16): 3-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, 2B
  • JD Mundy, Radford (Covington 2018): 2-4, run, 3 RBIs, 2B, HR
  • Conner Pohl, Ohio State (Front Royal 2017): 3-4, 2 runs, RBI, BB, 2B
  • Brent Todys, Ohio State (New Market 2018): 2-5, run, 2 RBIs, HR

  • Trevin Esquerra, Loyoal Marymount (Purcellville 2017): 3-4, run, 2 RBIs, HR

Pitcher of the Day

A player with perhaps the largest gap between summers spent in the Valley, our POD is Virginia Tech’s Luke Scherzer, who was a Harrisonburg Turk in 2014 and 2018. Luke threw 5 innings yesterday for Tech, allowing 4 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and struck out 4 to earn the win. Luke is now 2-2, 4.79, with a 1.49 WHIP, and 8 walks against 15 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings pitched.
