Big, big day in college baseball Saturday with a number of awesome performances. Let’s focus on three, with some others listed below:
- Patrick McColl (Charlottesville 2018) hit a walk-off grand slam for Harvard against Yale. Down 8-1 going into the bottom of the 9th, the Crimson stunned Yale with 9 runs in the inning, highlighted and ended by the McColl slam. Patrick is absolutely crushing the ball this spring- he’s at 442/470/821 in 95 at-bats, with 26 runs, 9 doubles, 3 triples, 7 home runs, and 29 RBIs. He either leads or is tied for the team lead in the following categories: batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, runs, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, and RBIs. Phew! (By the way, his home run and RBI totals are already new season highs for Patrick.)
- Rider’s Pete Soporowski (Staunton 2017) threw an excellent game yesterday, and has been getting great results all spring. Yesterday, he threw 7 2/3 shutout innings, while allowing 5 hits, 0 walks, and striking out 7 against Saint Peter’s. For the season, he’s 2-2, 3.15, with a 1.075 WHIP, 1.1 BB/9, and 12.4 K/9 in 40 innings. Seriously, he’s walked 5 batters and struck out 55! You know who he reminds me of? Nick Margevicius.
- Lastly, Samford’s Jordan Fucci (Staunton 2016) had a good game yesterday against UT Martin, going 3-3, with a run, walk, home runs, and 4 RBIs. The redshirt junior is now hitting 302/388/534 in 116 at-bats, with 24 runs, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs, and 25 RBIs.
