Spotlight on De Guzman and Wetherbee

Two 2018 Valley Leaguers had excellent games in NCAA Division-I games on Sunday. Let’s take a look:

  • Alabama State’s Cristopher De Guzman (New Market 2018) had a huge day at the plate, going 3-5, with 3 runs, a double, home run, hit-by-pitch, and 7 RBIs. Cristopher is now hitting 269/362/370 in 119 at-bats, with 30 runs, 3 doubles, 3 home runs, 27 RBIs, and a 16/16 BB/K ratio.
  • Elon’s Jared Wetherbee (Charlottesville 2018), the top starter in the 2018 VBL season, threw 7 shutout innings yesterday while allowing 5 hits, 0 walks, and striking out 8. He’s now 4-3, 3.14, with a 1.16 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9, and 11.1 K/9 in 48 2/3 innings pitched. It’s been interesting reading scouting reports from Elon’s pitching staff- George Kirby and Kyle Brnovich are going to get drafted pretty high this year. Jared’s stats aren’t far behind, but, of course, he’s just a sophomore, so he’s not draft-eligible yet.

Others of Note

  • Connor Gillispie, VCU (Charlottesville 2017): 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K’s, win
  • Cam Weinberger, Charleston Southern (Charlottesville 2018): 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K’s, win
  • Gabe Montenegro, Southern Mississippi (Waynesboro 2018): 4-6, 4 runs, 2 RBIs, HR
  • Justin Hayes, Norfolk State (Strasburg 2018): 4-6, 3 runs, RBI, 2B, 2 SB
  • Eriq White, Alabama State (Purcellville 2016): 4-5, 2 runs, RBI, 2 BB, 3 2B, SB
