Well, the headline is a little misleading, but true as well…. in that there are three former Valley Leaguers playing for the Lexington Legends in the South Atlantic League. The Legends are the Kansas City Royals’ Low-A squad.

Well, all three are playing really well, so let’s take a look:

  • Jonathan Bowlan (New Market 2016) was the earliest draft pick of the entire league when the Royals picked him in the 2nd round just last June. I think it’s fair to say that he got off to a rocky start in pro ball, going 1-4, 6.94 in 9 starts and 35 innings in 2018. It’s also fair to say that he’s righted the ship, so to speak, and is off to an excellent start so far in ’19. In 13 1/3 innings, he’s 1-0, 2.70, with a 1.05 WHIP, 1.4 BB/9, and 13.5 K/9. He has walked 2 batters and struck out 20!
  • Michael Gigliotti (Covington 2015) also dealt with adversity in 2018- he tore up his knee and only played in six games all season. Well, he’s back, and it looks like his quickness is back, too. In 16 games and 63 at-bats this spring, he’s hitting 270/382/413, with 12 runs, 9 doubles, 6 RBIs, a solid 10/15 BB/K ratio, and 9 stolen bases without being caught.
  • Nick Hutchins (Front Royal 2015) hasn’t really dealt with adversity in his pro career yet. After getting picked in the 27th round of the 2017 draft, he went 17-69 in his first taste of pro ball, but really performed well in 2018, hitting 292/377/517 in 178 at-bats for Idaho Falls in the Pioneer League. He was ATVL’s Rookie-Level Hitter of the Year. This spring, after 39 at-bats, Nick is hitting 333/350/564, with 9 doubles already.

Congrats to all three!
