Waynesboro’s Deven Judy is not a large man, but he throws the baseball like he is.

Coming in at 5-8, 150, the junior from Gannon was a key arm for the Generals this summer, helping the team to a franchise-record .738 regular season winning percentage.

He put up the following line:

Way ERA W L G GS IP H R ER BB K BAVG WIP BB/9 K/9
2019 3.21 3 0 9 8 28.0 20 10 10 14 27 0.206 1.214 4.5 8.7
Play 0.00 0 1 1 1 1.0 1 3 0 3 2 0.200 4.000 27.0 18.0

Among pitchers considered for this list, Judy finished tenth in ERA, sixth in batting average against, and ninth in WHIP. Judy was a bulldog on the mound. I personally witnessed an evening when his coach, Zac Cole, came out to get him with just an out to go to be eligible for a win. Judy talked his way into a chance, came through with an out, and got a win for his troubles.

Judy was the pitcher of the day on the very first day of the season, May 31, when he threw four innings, allowing one hit, one run, three walks, and struck out six. He was also excellent on July 18 at Covington, when he threw three no-hit, shutout innings while striking out five. He was named second team All-Valley League after the season.

Judy has been excellent at Gannon in his first two years:

ERA W L G GS IP H R ER BB K WHIP BB/9 K/9
2018 4.92 3 4 15 9 53.0 56 34 29 33 61 1.679 5.6 10.4
2019 2.49 8 0 13 10 72.3 58 30 20 33 96 1.259 4.1 12.0

Going 8-0, 2.49, with 96 strikeouts in 72 innings is no joke; in fact, Judy is already fourth on the Gannon all-time list for strikeouts. His 2019 season grabbed quite a bit of attention: he was the NCBWA Atlantic Pitcher of the Week on May 7, and was named the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week three days later.

The accolades rolled in after the season, too. He was named ABCA All-Atlantic Region First Team, All-PSAC West First Team, D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Second Team, and NCBWA All-Atlantic Region Second Team.

Watch for Judy to have another excellent spring for the Golden Knights!
