Hitter of the Day

On June 23, 2017, Front Royal’s Dominic Canzone went 4-5 against Woodstock, with four runs scored, a double, home run, two stolen bases, and three RBIs in the Cards’ 11-1 win. Canzone didn’t stay the whole summer, but he was excellent while he played; he hit .404/.457/.544 in 114 at-bats, with three doubles, two triples, three home runs, 23 RBIs, and an 11/7 BB/K ratio. He was ATVL’s 5th best hitter that summer. He was picked in the 8th round of the 2019 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and split his ’19 pro season between the Pioneer and Northwest League. He’s still active.

Pitcher of the Day

On June 23, 2013, New Market’s Cory Rhodes threw seven shutout innings against Strasburg, walking none and striking out seven in the 1-0 win. Rhodes started eight games that summer, and finished 5-2, 3.58, with a 1.29 WHIP and 41 K’s in 42 2/3 innings pitched. From King University, Rhodes was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014, and he appeared in four games for the Bristol Pirates in the Appalachian League that summer, and was released after the season. He was named head baseball coach at Cloudland High School in Tennessee in 2016.
