Three former Valley Leaguers put up good starts on the hill yesterday, ranging from good to tremendous.
First of all, Peyton Plumlee (Strasburg 2016), from Mississippi State, had a good start against UAB. In 4 2/3 innings and 64 pitches, he allowed 7 hits, 0 walks, 2 earned runs, and struck out 3. He did not get a decision. It was his second appearance of the season so far, and he’s 0-0, 4.05, with 5 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Peyton was ATVL’s 10th best starter in 2016.
Secondly, former Charlottesville Tom Sox Cody Maw (2018) threw a very good game for Charleston Southern against Charleston yesterday. In 5 innings and 88 pitches, Cody allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), walked 1, and struck out 4. For the season, he’s 0-0, 1.13, with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts in 8 innings pitched. Cody was the league’s 9th best reliever last summer, and is a preseason All-Conference selection by Collegiate Baseball.
And lastly, UAB’s Graham Ashcraft (Waynesboro 2018) had the best start of all, throwing 5 2/3 shutout, no-hit innings against his former team, Mississippi State (and Peyton Plumlee). He walked 2 and struck out 7. He left with a 2-0 lead, but UAB’s bullpen gave up the lead. It was Graham’s second game this season; he’s 0-0, 0.00, with 12 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings pitched. He was both Perfect Game’s and ATVL’s 10th best prospect last summer, and is Baseball America’s 8th best draft prospect in in the USA Conference.
Congrats to all three!
